How to Find and Interpret Occupations

Finding Occupations

The Search Occupations page contains five fields for entering search criteria: Occupation, Keywords, Occupation Designator, Date, and ACE ID. A detailed explanation of how each field is used in the search can be found by clicking the question mark icon next to the field.

If search criteria are entered into multiple fields, then the search results for all fields are added together (ANDed). To illustrate, entering elec into Keywords and 00 into Occupation Designator searches for all occupation specialty codes beginning with 00 AND containing the word fragment elec somewhere in the occupation title or subtitles.

The Keywords field allows for compound criteria. Use the plus sign (+), ampersand (&), or the word and when criteria are to be combined (ANDed). Use the vertical pipe (|), a blank space, or the word or when criteria are to be considered separately (ORed). When there is a mixture of ANDs and ORs, the ANDs are evaluated first. To illustrate, field & artillery senior + sergeant is evaluated as (field AND artillery) OR (senior AND sergeant). Search criteria are not case sensitive, and spaces before or after the plus sign (+), vertical pipe (|), or ampersand (&) operators are not required. To illustrate, vulcan + crewman and VULCAN+CREWMAN produce the same search results. Surround a phrase with quotes to avoid having the enclosed words considered separately (ORed) because of blank spaces. To illustrate, "vulcan crewman" results in a search for vulcan crewman instead of vulcan OR crewman.

Interpreting Occupations

Occupation exhibits are subdivided into multiple sections, and are structured differently for many of the occupation categories. The representative sampling of occupation exhibits provided in the links below identify the various sections found in the exhibits and describe the contents and purpose of each section.

When you read an exhibit, consider not only the credit recommendation section, but also the description section. The descriptions are similar to learning outcome statements of postsecondary courses and programs of study, and provide essential information about the learning required for proficiency in the occupation. Comparing the description section with a description of the course or program of study that the student will pursue will help you

  • determine how much of the recommended credit applies to the course or program of study at your institution;
  • identify additional areas of possible credit;
  • resolve problems with duplication of credit when the applicant has applied for credit for more than one military learning experience; and
  • place the student at the appropriate level in the course sequence or program of study.

The credit recommendations are advisory. They are intended to assist in placing active-duty personnel and veterans in postsecondary programs of study and jobs. The recommendations may be modified.

When an applicant has applied for credit for more than one military learning experience, you may have to reduce the total amount of credit recommended to avoid granting duplicate credit.
